This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to Sports & profession.

athlete: noun; A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.; Example: Nevertheless, other people assert that athletes deserve their salary.
career: noun; An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress.; Example: They have a very short career, as can only play at highest performance during a very limited number of years.
compensation: noun; Something, typically money, awarded to someone in recognition of loss, suffering, or injury.; Example: In summary, I believe that athletes deserve a huge compensation for their work.
irresponsible: adjective; (of a person, attitude, or action) not showing a proper sense of responsibility.; Example: Some people argue that is irresponsible to pay such amount of money to people who has just borne with a natural gift to play certain sport.
nevertheless: adverb; In spite of that; notwithstanding; all the same.; Example: Nevertheless, other people assert that athletes deserve their salary.
performance: noun; An act of presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment.; Example: They have a very short career, as can only play at highest performance during a very limited number of years.
professional: noun; A person engaged in a specified activity, especially a sport, as a main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.; Example: Nowadays, it is acknowledged that sport professionals earn huge salaries that exceed other respected professionals by far.
sponsor: verb; Provide funds for (a project or activity or the person carrying it out).; Example: Companies invest a lot of money to sponsor teams and this creates an extra pressure on the players.
witness: verb; See (an event, typically a crime or accident) happen.; Example: Furthermore, we are setting a bad example for the youngsters as they grow up witnessing how our society do not reward the hard work.
youngster: noun; A child, young person, or young animal.; Example: Furthermore, we are setting a bad example for the youngsters as they grow up witnessing how our society do not reward the hard work.
